Special dinner with Michael Ruhlman at Lantern

Michael Ruhlman and I go back 16 years – I wrote about it in the post Playing for honor:

I know him from Northern Ohio Live Magazine, where we worked together for a full two weeks while he was finishing up his time there and I was just beginning mine. Michael once told me that his daily routine is to write 1400 words, no matter how lethargic or distracted he is. His dedication to this routine means he’s pumped out seven books since I first met him in 1994. That’s impressive. That’s honorable.

That was written in 2003, and Michael has since become a popular food blogger and written at least another 7 books about chefs, restaurant training and cooking technique. He’s a star.

Michael came to Durham in September 2007 for a Triangle food blogging dinner at Piedmont Restaurant. The menu for that meal, and my recap, are at Blogging about the food blogging event. Michael wrote about the event in his post On Going Where You Don’t Want to Go:

The main course featured the loin of pork, all of which was from a breed of hog that was partly ossabaw, raised by Eliza McLean, local being a feature of the evening.

Now Michael is coming back to the Triangle to promote his latest book, called Ruhlman’s Twenty. It distills all of cooking into 20 fundamental techniques, illustrated with 100 recipes, and hundreds of instructive photos by his wife, Donna Turner Ruhlman.

Dinner at Lantern

On Wed., Nov. 2, 2011 at 6:30 p.m., Lantern chef Andrea Reusing – herself a celebrated cookbook author and 2011 winner of the James Beard award for Best Chef Southeast– will host a special dinner and conversation with Michael.

Andrea’s promising to prepare charcuterie and other food that’€™s cured, brined, pickled, fermented and salted (perfect if you know that Michael’s written a couple of books about charcuterie).

The 10-course family-style meal will include 18-month old whey-fed ham, North Carolina sashimi, crispy rillettes with salted “ume” cherries and moulard duck cured with sake kasu. Andrea will post a full menu soon.

Tickets for this sure-to-be-memorable meal are $120 per person, including wine pairings (excluding tax and gratuity).

I hope you’ll join me at this dinner. Call Lantern at 919.969.8846 to reserve your seat.

Ruhlman at The Monti, too

The night before this special dinner, Michael will be a featured storyteller at The Monti.
